Experience a Journey of a lifetime

Journey to KenyaCome with us and see the amazing impact you are having on the lives of people in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Meet the families – your world neighbors – who are building stronger futures thanks to your support.

World Neighbors Journeys offer the opportunity for members of the John L. Peters Society to meet the people with whom we work with and gain a deeper understanding of their challenges, dreams and successes.

Journey to EcuadorSee World Neighbors in action in 2010!

These are trips you will never forget – for many they are life-changing.

Nepal - April 16-28 (estimated ground cost is $3,200)
Across the globe and in the shadows of the Himalayas, we return to Nepal to visit the mid-hill regions and in the tropical Terai in the south. Most of the work is with the lowest castes and women. Many young girls are forced into arranged marriages or even prostitution at an early age out of economic desperation. Through women’s savings and credit groups – led by women and with them approving loans and setting the interest rate – that trend is being dramatically reversed. Last year, these low caste women made loans totaling more than $600,000. Most remarkable is that it is not money we gave them but their own money they earned as a result of our training in agriculture, income generation, health and rural livelihoods. We will also make a visit to the Chitwan National Park, a remarkable game reserve, tour the historic center of Kathmandu and have many opportunities to view the Himalayas.

Peru – May 3-12 (estimated ground cost is $2,200)
We are offering our first Journey to Peru in over 20 years. In an area devastated by the conflicts of the Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path) during the 1980s, this stark and remote region still suffers from some of the highest rates of poverty and child malnutrition in the western hemisphere. You will meet villagers who are working with World Neighbors to rebuild their lives through an integrated approach to agriculture, health and women’s savings and credit groups. Our Journey will be augmented by a visit to the magnificent ruins of Machu Picchu and exploring the historic districts of Lima and Cuzco. There will also be an option to add on a visit to our programs in Bolivia or to the Galapagos.

Kenya and Tanzania –  August 1-14 (estimated ground cost is $3,700)
Around the shores of Lake Victoria in western Kenya, World Neighbors is working in communities where families face many economic hardships due to unproductive farming and where HIV/AIDS infection rates are as high as 25%. An integrated approach to health, agriculture and community development is helping these villagers to see hope through better use of their land, drought resistant economic activities such as bee-keeping and prevention, care and treatment of AIDS. We will conclude the trip with a visit to the magnificent Masai Mara Reserve, one of the most dramatic game parks in Africa

Customized Journeys
A customized trip can be tailored to help visitors learn more about specific aspects of our work that they are most interested in helping to support. Possible destinations include Indonesia or Nicaragua, as well as other countries where World Neighbors works.

The process of community development is remarkable but fragile and centers on the local people leading the process. Therefore, we are selective about bringing visitors to our program areas and are making it a benefit exclusive to members of the John L. Peters Society

Part education and part adventure

Overnight accommodations are generally modest but comfortable, and World Neighbors staff carefully plans each itinerary, but the logistics of travel in developing countries require flexibility and occasionally alternative scheduling. Because you will be traveling with members of our seasoned U.S. and local in-country team members, they will ensure that you are able to visit with people in the communities and witness their accomplishments.

Journeys groups are deliberately kept small in size so your experience is intimate and meaningful. As a result, we anticipate that these trips will fill quickly.
